It is not war and death and famine, it's not that at all. It's the opposite of that, it's to persuade us there's a world outside of that. That's why sport is important.
Not my words. The words of Michael Parkinson. It always seemed like the nicest, simplest way of putting it. Yeah, so the reason – no seriously, babes, wait – I'm watching highlights of New Zealand against South Africa at 2.37am is because it's the opposite of death and famine, and it's there to remind us there's a world outside... oh.
The thing is, it turns out sport isn't actually the opposite of all that any more. The fun and the spectacle remains.
