How joy turned into tragedy Images show blaze ripped through room within seconds

Sparkling flares being held too close to the ceiling are most likely to have caused a blaze that killed more than 40 people, according to initial investigations into the club fire at the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana.

Emergency teams are still working at Le Constellation, the scene of one of the country’s worst tragedies. Videos and photos taken at the venue suggest the fire, which left more than 100 people injured, spread rapidly.
Béatrice Pilloud, the attorney general of Valois, said: “Everything suggests the fire started from the burning candles or ‘Bengal lights’ that had been attached to champagne bottles. These went too close to the ceiling.”
An undated photo, top left, shows the bar with what could be soundproofing or insulation covering the ceiling.
The blaze appears to have started at about 1.30am as revellers were ringing in the new year. Video, photos and reports from witnesses suggest the flames spread quickly and people had difficulty escaping.
