Germany joins calls for US talks after Trump's 50% tariff threat

Germany's finance minister yesterday joined a chorus of European politicians in calling for talks with the US after Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the European Union next month.
Trump made the threat on Friday, saying discussions with the EU were "going nowhere", and that the tariffs would be applied from 1 June. He repeated his longstanding view that the EU states had "banded together to take advantage of us".
Lars Klingbeil said: "We don't need any further provocations, but serious negotiations." He told Bild newspaper he had spoken with the US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, and warned him that "the US tariffs endanger the US economy just as much as the German and European economy".
