For decades, Dick Van Dyke has been pilloried for his attempts at a British accent.
Now the actor, who apologised for the "most atrocious cockney accent in the history of cinema" as the chimney sweep Bert in Mary Poppins, has revealed he was in the running to play another British icon on screen: James Bond.
Speaking on the Today programme in the US, Van Dyke, who turns 100 next month, said the Bond producer Albert Broccoli had approached him to ask if he fancied playing the spy after Sean Connery's departure. Van Dyke's performance in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 1968 had led the producer to think of him as a possible successor to Connery.
