France hit by fresh power cut a day after Cannes film festival outage

French authorities have launched an investigation into a power cut blamed on sabotage that affected at least 45,000 people, just a day after a similar outage disrupted the final day of the Cannes film festival.
City authorities said an electrical transformer had been set on fire in the west of Nice in the early hours of yesterday, although power was restored later in the day. A day earlier, a separate blaze, believed to have been started by arson, contributed to a power cut that hit Cannes.
The first power cut affected 160,000 households and knocked out traffic lights and cash machines throughout the French Riviera.
French broadcaster BFMTV reported this incident was made worse as three of four pillars of an electricity pylon in the region had been cut with a saw.
