East Wing of White House demolished despite earlier assurances

The East Wing of the White House has been completely destroyed to make way for Donald Trump’s $300m (€225m) gilded ballroom, just days after the administration announced it would happen - and contradicting his earlier promise that the existing building would not be touched.
Satellite images showed the historic building’s east section reduced to rubble yesterday, to the outrage of historians, former White House officials and members of the public.
Demolition has gone ahead despite the administration not first sending plans to the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), which oversees building work on government buildings across Washington DC.
