Carney promises Trump will not 'break us' after stunning poll comeback
The Guardian
|April 30, 2025
Mark Carney has claimed Donald Trump wanted to "break us" after he led Canada's Liberal party to victory in an election upended by threats and aggression from the US president.
The party's triumph secured an unlikely comeback for Carney, a former Bank of England governor and political novice who only recently succeeded Justin Trudeau as prime minister. Results yesterday suggested the Liberals fell just short of a majority and would need the help of political rivals to govern.
Mirroring a theme of the campaign, Carney told election-night supporters that Trump wanted to "break us, so that America can own us". To shouts from the crowd, he added: "That will never, ever happen."
He also gave a stark assessment of a world order once defined by an integrated global trading system with the US at the centre. He said this was over and he would reshape Canada's relationships with other nations.
"We are over the shock over American betrayal. But we will never forget the lessons," he said.
As results from Canada's Atlantic provinces and vote-rich Quebec and Ontario started to come in on Monday night, supporters at the Liberals' event erupted in cheers as it became clear their party would win.
In a shock result, the Conservative leader, Pierre Poilievre, lost the seat he had held since 2004, even as his party did better than expected.
Poilievre pledged to keep his job during his election night speech but the defeat is expected to inflame tensions within the party.
