ENCROACHMENT INVITES WILD VISITORS
The Global Kashmir
|July 05, 2025
In recent years, the sight of wild animals straying into residential areas has moved from rare news to routine occurrence in many parts of India and particularly in ecologically sensitive regions like Kashmir.
-
Leopards wandering through village lanes, bears rummaging through garbage, or wild boars damaging crops are no longer exceptional. These incidents not only endanger human lives but also put the survival of already-threatened wildlife at risk. While such encounters often provoke panic, the root cause lies not in the wild animals’ behaviour, but in ours.
What we are witnessing is not a sudden invasion, but a long-term consequence of how human activity has disrupted natural ecosystems. Deforestation, urban sprawl, habitat fragmentation, and poorly planned development have shrunk the space available to wild animals. Once forests are cleared for roads, resorts, or residential colonies, animals lose their homes, food sources, and breeding grounds. Left with no choice, they begin to follow the scent of survival and that often leads them straight into human settlements.
In the Kashmir Valley, the issue is becoming acute. With growing pressure on forest lands for tourism infrastructure, hydropower projects, and agriculture, the boundaries between "wild" and "domestic" are blurring. Rapid urbanisation, particularly near forest fringes, has meant that human presence now intrudes upon areas that once served as vital wildlife corridors and foraging grounds.
