Work to finally start on new school site

BUILDING WILL BRING AN END TO STUDENTS BEING TAUGHT IN CABINS

- By DANIEL HODGSON

WORK is set to begin this week on Outwood Riverside’s permanent home in Middlehaven.

Work is due to start tomorrow, with the new school site due to open in spring 2027. This should bring an end to students being taught in temporary sites, such as portable cabins, as has been happening during recent years.

News has been welcomed by stakeholders including the town’s MP, councillors, the principal of Outwood Academy Riverside and mayor of Middlesbrough. If plans stay on track, the opening date will come almost a decade after the initial announcement was made back in 2018. Middlesbrough Council said that they have worked “closely” with both DfE and Outwood Grange Academies Trust to reach a conclusion after years of “frustration”.

The Department for Education (DfE) confirmed on Monday that contractors Bowmer and Kirkland have been appointed. The school’s permanent home will span three stories and be located in the vicinity of Middlesbrough College.
