Shipwreck revealed at exceptionally low tide

The remains of the historic vessel, located on the beach close to the 'sandy' car park, is a protected wreck site and was once completely covered. It reappears from time to time but is most often submerged due to tidal conditions.

Thought to be of a type of vessel known as a collier brig, it is also believed to have been wrecked, or foundered, during a winter storm in the 18th century.

With bows facing towards the shore, the wreck boasts a rare and significant level of preservation.

Measuring approximately 25 metres long and seven metres wide, it was discovered in August 1996 by two local men after a severe storm stripped sand from the beach.
