'Nasty' flu strain sees hospital beds filling up

A TEESSIDE hospital trust has one of the highest percentages of beds taken up by flu patients in the country.

Hospitals are dealing with a 'nasty' strain of flu, with numbers rising throughout Teesside and the North East.
It comes as NHS figures show a spike in the number of people being hospitalised due to the illness. The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust saw an average 6.7% of its general and acute beds taken up by flu patients in the week ending December 7.
That makes it the sixth highest percentage in the country. Further statistics show there were an average of 62 people a day in Teesside hospital beds with flu in the week ending December 7.
That's up from 42 a day a week earlier. However, the number of cases isn't at record levels, with the average for the same time last year being 78 a day.
