'Learning curve' for owner after hygiene rating

THE owner of a catering business says they have corrected their errors after a “horrendous” one-star food hygiene rating that left her in tears.

Julie Craig, who runs Cafe Creations 2 go in North Skelton, was told major improvement was necessary at her business by food safety officers. The business on Vaughan Street was inspected in March and concerns were raised over systems and checks in place to ensure the food sold was safe to eat.

A report said sandwiches were kept past use-by dates, bread was stored outside and fridge temperatures were not being monitored.

There were cross-contamination and food poisoning risks in the fridge, with raw mincemeat being stored on upper shelves close to other foods.

Staff were not cleaning salad items before use, while there was no designated hand basin in the food room, the report states.
