MAYOR SAYS SPADES WILL 'PROBABLY' BE IN GROUND IN 2027

- By DANIEL HODGSON Local democracy reporter

THE Tees Valley mayor has confirmed that his ambition is still to see work under way at Teesside Airport's new train station come 2027.

Conservative Ben Houchen discussed the near £1bn of funding, which was allocated to the region under the previous Tory government, put on hold when Labour came to power and then confirmed by the current government in June this year.

As part of the £978m dedicated to the Tees Valley (now known as Transport for City Regions funding), £20m was for a new station at the region's airport. The now-largely dismantled station stopped operating in May 2022. Lord Houchen was quizzed about the latest on the situation on one of his regular appearances on BBC Radio Tees, earlier this week.

Caller Matty from Redcar asked about the train station at Teesside Airport, describing the remains of the existing, closed station as "an absolute ruin".
