Former social club to be razed to the ground

A FORMER social club which hosted top bands including Wolf Alice and The Vaccines is set to be razed to the ground.
A planning application has been submitted to demolish Westgarth Social Club and three attached terraced houses on Southfield Road, Middlesbrough.
In plans published on Middlesbrough Council's website, the application said the proposal is aimed at "clearing the site for future development".
Applicant Gareth Stobart of Biz Investments Ltd told The Gazette that the plans for the site were "in the works" but they were not yet at the stage to publicly share details. If passed by the council, the demolition is expected to start immediately.
The social club was founded in 1911. In its later years, it became well-known for hosting live music with acts including James Bay, Public Service Broadcasting, Wolf Alice, The Vaccines and Edwyn Collins.
It was also a key venue in the annual Twisterella music festival.
