Almost 5,000 sign petition to save cliff lift

GROWING pressure is being heaped on North Yorkshire Council to rethink its controversial plans to infill Whitby's historic cliff lift as campaigners rally to preserve the cherished local "lifeline".
The authority is encountering mounting opposition from politicians and activists across party lines over its proposal to infill the Whitby Cliff Lift at a price of £600,000.
Nearly 5,000 people have backed a petition demanding the cliff lift's preservation after it was closed in 2022 following the discovery of structural deterioration. Local residents are also demanding a public consultation on the proposed infilling, alongside an existing consultation regarding the free replacement bus service operating during summer months.
Alison Hume, the MP for Scarborough and Whitby, accused North Yorkshire Council of being "cloth-eared when it comes to the town" and said the authority should appoint a senior officer for Whitby to "break the Northallerton mind set."
