Women filmmakers take over 27th French Film Fest in Cebu

Providing French female filmmakers a platform to share their work and advocacy worldwide is the key theme of the 27th French Film Festival, subtitled with the French word for women, “Féminist!”

After its Metro Manila run last November, the Embassy of France in the Philippines and Micronesia and Alliance Française de Cebu brought its lineup of five films to Cebu, screening them for free at SM City Cebu Cinema throughout the weekend of March 28 to 29.

Holding the Cebu leg of the festival four months later, on the last days of March, was a way to close not only International Women's Month but also the Month of La Francophonie, which promotes the French language.

The French Embassy's Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Affairs Mathilde Séjourné, told the audience on opening night: "It's an opportunity for the embassy and our trusted partners to promote our diplomacy. We are proud to showcase [five] French films directed by female filmmakers, which include promising talents."

"We hope that through cinema, we can showcase our culture and that you might consider learning the language here in Cebu through the Alliance Française," she added.
