PRC Cebu, Lapu-Lapu chapters intensify call for blood donors

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Cebu and Lapu-Lapu Chapters are stepping up their call for voluntary blood donors as demand for platelet concentrate and platelet apheresis continues to surge, especially with the rise in dengue cases during the rainy season.

PRC-Cebu administrator Atty. Vera G. De Jesus-Patel explained that while whole blood is generally sufficient, platelet apheresis remains a challenge because of its short five-day shelf life.

“Platelet apheresis requires a fresh donor, strict screening, and laboratory processing. Often, we have to call donors on demand,” she said.

Despite these hurdles, PRC assured that every donation undergoes mandatory safety screening for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, and other infections.
