The Freeman
|January 20, 2026
Despite the insistent call of Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival for residents and revelers to practice waste segregation and avoid single-use plastics, more garbage was still collected after the Sinulog Grand Parade, particularly along the parade route and nearby areas.
-
The Department of Public Services (DPS) reported that a total of 300 tons of garbage were hauled overnight after the January 18 festivities, surpassing last year’s 290 tons.
DPS Chief Poloy Gelasque said cleanup operations began at 8:00 P.M. the other night and concluded at 5:30 A.M. yesterday, with teams working tirelessly to restore order to the city’s main streets.
Authorities noted that the increase was expected, given the record 5.2 million participants this year compared to 4 million in 2025.
