It was Christmas Eve in their small bahay kubo by the river, and the family was busy decorating their Christmas tree and hanging colorful parol in every window.
The warm smell of bibingka and puto bumbong filled the air, and the soft glow of candlelight made the room feel magical.
But something felt different this year. Grandma Lily's rocking chair sat empty by the window.
Mia and Ben missed her terribly. Grandma Lily had always been the heart of their home, her laughter like the sound of jingling bells, and her hugs as warm as the tropical sun. But this year, she was gone. The flash flood had carried her away, leaving the family safe, thanks to the prayer she had taught them.
Grandma Lily had a special prayer, one she whispered every night to protect her loved ones from bagyo, lindol, and fires. She had told Mia and Ben, "When you say this prayer with your heart, nothing can harm you."
