Following the death of folk singer and OPM icon Freddie Aguilar last May 27 at the age of 72 due to multiple organ failure, Senator Robinhood Padilla filed a proposed resolution to make a national artist out of him.

It wasn’t so well received considering the timing.
Surprisingly, the death of Aguilar didn’t seem to garner a lot of attention. Perhaps this is because another icon, national artist Nora Aunor, renowned actress and singer, had just died and the country was still experiencing “national icon death fatigue” when Aguilar passed.
The highly-contentious 2025 midterm elections had also just concluded and politics was still pretty much in the air, perhaps this was another reason.
