DOH warns vs self-medication
The Freeman
|November 08, 2025
As floodwaters receded following the devastation of Typhoon Tino, the Department of Health-Central Visayas Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD 7) has reminded the residents of Metro Cebu and other affected areas not to self-medicate, especially with antibiotics, and seek immediate medical consultation to prevent serious health complications.
DOH-7 regional director Dr. Joshua G. Brillantes emphasized that while the department had pre-deployed medicines and hygiene kits to evacuation centers even before the typhoon struck, the public must take extra caution in using antimicrobial drugs such as doxycycline, which is prescribed for leptospirosis prophylaxis.
"Antibiotics should only be taken when prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider. Taking them without consultation can cause adverse reactions and reduce their effectiveness over time,” Brillantes said.
He explained that improper use of antibiotics can lead to antimicrobial resistance, making infections harder to treat and posing greater health risks.
“Doxycycline is part of the prophylaxis for leptospirosis, but it must only be taken under medical supervision. Misuse may cause stomach upset, allergic reactions, or other serious side effects,” he warned.
