City officials open to singing National Anthem in Cebuano

Cebu City officials are open to exploring the possibility of singing the Philippine National Anthem in the Cebuano dialect, with top leaders expressing support for the idea during Monday’s flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.

The ceremony, led by the Office of Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, became a platform for advocating the use of the local language in singing the national anthem. During his message, Osmeña questioned why the anthem is sung in Tagalog, emphasizing his pride in being a Cebuano public servant.
When it was his turn to speak, Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival Sr. also expressed support for revisiting the option of rendering the anthem in Cebuano, suggesting it could be a form of respect for the Philippine flag.
"I don’t think there is a problem with that, because and importante sa national anthem is the same tong gikanta and the same ang tune, ug sa tinagalog, then naa say binisaya, we are going to consult," Archival told reporters in an interview later that day.
