Brgy Day-as seeks cash aid from CH to preserve bridge

Aiming to preserve the century-old and iconic Sikatuna Bridge, the Barangay Day-as Council sought financial assistance from the Cebu City government.

During the launching of the Sikatuna Bridge Day yesterday, July 24, which was spearheaded by Day-as Barangay Captain Freddie Esmas, together with Cebu City Councilors Nyza “Nice” Archival, Franklyn Ong, and the city’s Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) Head Bryner Diaz, a historic event was celebrated to commemorate the first anniversary since it was officially recognized as an Important Cultural Property.

Last year, the bridge was also included in the Cebu City Registry of Cultural Property by the Cebu City Council through Resolution No. 16-0176-2024, declaring every 24th of July as Sikatuna Bridge Day.

Dating back to 1920, the Sikatuna Bridge was built following the victory of the American Military during the Spanish-American war to connect the streets of Sikatuna and Bonifacio.

In his message, Esmas said that the barangay council is seeking funds for the preservation of one of the few remaining colonial bridges in Cebu, which also served as the gateway of the historical Parian District and Colon Street in Cebu City.
