Bantayan Island: Cebu Province's emerging lifeline for food security

After being in the headlines for the controversial construction of a high-end resort in Bantayan Island, the paradise up North of Cebu is being looked into as a strategic cornerstone in Cebu's evolving food security blueprint.

Following a two-day immersion last week, former Agriculture Secretary and now Food Security Adviser to Governor Pamela Baricuatro, Manny Piñol described the island's agricultural and aqua-cultural potential as “deeply impressive,” citing its existing strengths and untapped opportunities.
Already recognized as Cebu’s “Egg Basket,” Bantayan Island produces an estimated 1.2 million eggs daily, supplying not only the province but also neighboring regions such as Leyte and Negros.
However, But Piñol believes the island's contribution could go far beyond poultry.
