SC to settle PF-ESl issue

The SC on Thursday agreed to examine the contentious question of whether employers can claim income tax deductions for employees’ PF and Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) contributions deposited after prescribed statutory due dates.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and Sandeep Mehta issued notice on an appeal challenging a Delhi HC ruling that employees’ PF and ESI contributions paid after the due dates under the respective welfare laws are not deductible, even if the employer deposits the amounts before filing the income tax return.
