CJI VOWS REGISTRY REFORMS
The Free Press Journal
|February 27, 2026
CJI Surya Kant on Thursday promised reforms in the Supreme Court Registry after discovering that a petition, which had earlier been dismissed by a three-judge bench, was listed again before another bench.
Calling it a serious issue, the CJI said he would undertake a deeper administrative probe and question Registry officials who “think they are permanent”, Bar & Bench reports.
The development came while a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipul Pancholi was hearing a plea challenging the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986. The plea assailed the state law on the ground of repugnancy owing to Section 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
