UK steps up vigil as Russian Naval activity surges near its waters

Britain has intensified maritime and aerial surveillance after a series of encounters with Russian naval vessels operating close to UK waters, prompting warnings from defence officials and renewed commitments to bolster national security.

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Severn intercepted the Russian corvette REN Stoikiy and tanker Yelnya as they passed through the Dover Strait and into the English Channel in recent days. HMS Severn shadowed the vessels before handing over the operation to a NATO ally off the French coast, while continuing to observe from distance.
