Time credits for care: Kerala's new elder support model

A pilot initiative launched by the Kerala Development and Innovation Strategic Council in the Elikulam Panchayat, Kottayam district, marks the state's first "Time Bank" programme designed to assist senior citizens living alone by turning volunteers’ hours into redeemable credits.
The scheme invites community members to spend time with elderly residents and accumulate hours that can later be exchanged for assistance when they themselves need support.
Under the initiative, volunteers earn time credits by spending scheduled hours with senior residents—activities might include companionship, assistance with errands or supervision at home—and the credits are tracked digitally via a dashboard.
