Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), Brihanmumbai, accelerates housing and rehabilitation projects
-
The Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), functioning under the Housing Department, Government of Maharashtra, is a cornerstone of urban transformation in Mumbai.
Established with the vision of creating a slum-free city, the authority works tirelessly to improve the lives of millions of citizens who live in vulnerable, unsafe, and unhygienic slum settlements. Its mission is not limited to constructing buildings but extends to creating sustainable, inclusive communities.
Through government resolutions and the Development Control and Promotion Regulations (DCPR) 2034, SRA ensures that eligible slum dwellers receive free, permanent housing units—300 square feet of carpet area for residential use and up to 225 square feet for nonresidential purposes. Alongside housing, the authority provides essential community infrastructure such as halls for social gatherings, society offices for administration, balwadis for child education, and skill development centres for livelihood enhancement.
Under the visionary leadership of Dr. Mahendra Kalyankar (IAS), Chief Executive Officer, the organization has set a clear direction rooted in a citizen-centric philosophy. His guidance has enabled the institution to function with greater efficiency while ensuring that the needs and concerns of the people remain at the heart of every decision. By prioritizing transparency, the organization ensures that its processes are open and accessible to all stakeholders, thereby building trust and credibility. Through accountability, it holds itself responsible for delivering on its commitments and maintaining the highest standards of governance. At the same time, by focusing on empowerment, the institution actively encourages citizens to participate, contribute, and benefit from various initiatives. This holistic approach not only enhances service delivery but also fosters stronger engagement between the administration and the community it serves.
