Einstein-inscribed Gandhi book emerges in Kerala
The Free Press Journal - Mumbai
|October 03, 2025
A previously unknown edition of a Gandhi biography, bearing a handwritten quote by Albert Einstein and published with Gandhi's permission in October 1944, has come to light in Kerala, drawing attention from scholars and collectors.
The discovery was made by a private collector in Kochi, who identified the book among family heirlooms and alerted academics working in Gandhian and Einstein studies. The edition includes a message that reads: “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth,” signed “A. Einstein, Princeton, New Jersey.”
The book’s front matter indicates it was published on 2 October 1944 with Gandhi's consent for inclusion of the message.
