ED raids in land probe

The Enforcement Directorate has initiated search operations at 15 locations across Chennai and Kancheepuram district as part of a money-laundering investigation linked to land acquisition by the National Highways Authority of India and the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu.
According to agency sources, the searches are targeting premises in areas including Sowcarpet, Kilpauk, KK Nagar, Saidapet, MGR Nagar, Ambattur and other spots in Kancheepuram. The operation is under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and is being carried out with heavy security presence.
The probe originates from an FIR lodged by the Kancheepuram police in 2023, involving allegations of forged documents used to claim compensation in land-acquisition executed by NHAI for highway widening and by SIPCOT for industrial estates.

'Can extend SIR draft roll deadline if needed'
The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it has the power to extend the date for publication of draft electoral rolls under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) if the petitioners are able to make out a case. The observation from Chief Justice of India Surya Kant came as parties in the West Bengal matter expressed concern that the case was being posted to December 9, the same day the draft roll is scheduled to be published. “So what? If you make out a case, then we can direct them to extend the date. Can that date be a ground for the Court to say that we don't have any power now? Court can always say,” the CJI remarked.
