Demand grows for 50% women's representation in DCC

All sections in India are fighting for reservations based on their population share.
-
While some communities have already secured their share, others continue their struggle. However, even though women constitute half of every community’s population, they remain deprived of political reservation benefits. The main reason, many argue, is the lack of proper political opportunities for women.
In Telangana, reservations for SCs and STs are being implemented, and the state government claims it is working to provide 42 percent reservation for BCs. Against this backdrop, the ongoing appointments to District Congress Committees (DCCs) have drawn attention. As the Congress government strives to ensure representation for all groups, there are growing demands within the party to allocate half of these posts to women. Many are questioning why women, who make up half the population, are not given half of the positions in power.
Amid these developments, internal discussions and appeals from women’s groups are intensifying for 50 percent representation in DCCs. On the occasion of Indira Gandhi's death anniversary, criticism has emerged over the lack of adequate representation for women in the Congress Party, which once had the country’s only woman Prime Minister.
