Protest brews over plan to axe 706 EEH trees

Strongly objecting to the proposal of axing 706 trees along the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) to make way for the elevated road project, Mumbaikars and green activists have warned to hit the streets if the trees are not spared.

Greens have expressed concerns over the removal of such a large number of trees; many of which are the highly-admired rosy trumpet trees.

Drawing inspiration from the 'Chipko movement', morning walkers on Tuesday hugged the trees, which have been pasted with the to-beaxed notices. Around 315 of these trees are likely to be cut permanently, while the others will be transplanted.
