War Museums of Rajasthan: Preserving history and honoring bravery
The Daily Guardian
|July 10, 2025
Rajasthan, known for its rich cultural heritage and desert landscapes, also holds a prominent place in India's military history.

The border regions of the state have witnessed significant battles, especially during the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pak wars. To honor the sacrifices and educate future generations, several war museums and memorials have been established, particularly around Jaisalmer, near the western front.
JAISALMER WAR MUSEUM Located about 10 kilometers from Jaisalmer on the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer Highway, the Jaisalmer War Museum was inaugurated in 2015 by Lt. Gen. Ashok Singh. Conceptualized by Lt. Gen. Bobby Mathews, this museum commemorates the bravery of Indian soldiers who fought in the desert terrain during past wars, especially the Battle of Longewala in 1971.
THE MUSEUM IS DIVIDED INTO VARIOUS HALLS: Laungewala Hall showcases the 1971 battle through 3D models, detailed maps, and original weapons, including a Pakistani tank captured during the conflict.
Indian Army Hall displays the history of the Indian Army from 1947 to the Kargil War in 1999. It features arms, uniforms, photographs, and equipment captured during conflicts.
