U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday described the European Union's offer to schedule trade talks as a "positive event," while also warning that he remains prepared to impose unilateral trade measures if negotiations fail to produce a fair agreement.

The president made the remarks on his social media platform, saying he had just been informed of the EU's move to quickly establish meeting dates. Trump expressed optimism that the bloc might finally be willing to open up its markets to more American goods, drawing a parallel to his aggressive stance on trade with China.

"This is a positive event, and I hope that they will, FINALLY, like my same demand to China, open up the European Nations for Trade with the United States of America," Trump wrote.
