Fasting is an age-old practice in various cultures and religions around the world, and in Hinduism, it holds immense significance, particularly during the sacred month of Sawan (Shravan).
During this month, the fasting tradition is especially observed on Sawan Somwar (Mondays), a day dedicated to Lord Shiva. For devotees, fasting during this holy month is more than just abstaining from food; it is a spiritual practice aimed at purification, self-discipline, and devotion.
This article explores why fasting helps during Sawan and its multiple benefits—spiritual, physical, and mental.
1. SPIRITUAL CLEANSING AND PURIFICATION The primary reason why fasting is observed during Sawan is for spiritual purification. Fasting allows devotees to focus their energies away from material distractions and immerse themselves in devotion and worship.
Lord Shiva, the deity worshipped during this month, is known to be the purifier of souls, and fasting helps devotees strengthen their connection with Him. It is believed that during Sawan, Lord Shiva grants his divine blessings more easily to those who observe the fasting rituals with sincere devotion.
The act of fasting is seen as a form of penance or tapasya, through which the body and mind are purified. The traditional belief is that fasting removes impurities in the body and soul, helping the devotee become more receptive to divine grace. As they pray, meditate, and chant mantras like "Om Namah Shivaya", they create a spiritual environment conducive to inner peace and transformation.
2. DETACHMENT FROM MATERIAL DESIRES One of the core principles of fasting is detachment from material desires. By abstaining from food and drink, a devotee exercises control over their senses, helping to detach themselves from worldly pleasures.
Sawan fasting helps individuals cultivate the power of self-discipline, a quality that is essential in spiritual growth. The month of Sawan, which holds special significance as a period of connection with Lord Shiva, encourages people to focus less on materialistic goals and more on their spiritual aspirations.
