The Royal Game: A history of Polo in Rajasthan

This gallant game, blending athleticism, strategy, and equestrian skill, has long been associated with the warrior aristocracy of India, especially the Rajputs.

In Rajasthan, polo is not merely a sport but a reflection of royal culture, martial heritage, and elite leisure.

The history of polo in Rajasthan is as vibrant and regal as the state itself. From its roots in ancient cavalry drills to the majestic polo grounds of Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Udaipur, polo has evolved into a symbol of grace, power, and enduring legacy.

ANCIENT ORIGINS OF POLO

While polo's global origins are traced back to Persia around the 6th century BCE, the sport made its way to India through Central Asian invasions and was embraced by various dynasties. In India, especially in the northern and north-western regions like Rajasthan, the game gained popularity among kings and warriors, who adapted it to suit their martial lifestyles.

In Rajasthan, the Rajput kings and nobles, known for their horse-riding prowess and valor, adopted polo not only as a recreational activity but also as a form of cavalry training. Polo sharpened their coordination, team spirit, and battlefield tactics—all vital skills for a warrior class.

POLO AND THE RAJPUT COURTS

During the medieval period, Rajasthan's major kingdoms—including Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, and Udaipur—established polo as a favored pastime of the royal courts. Rajput rulers, who were patrons of culture and sport, built dedicated polo grounds within their palace complexes or near fortresses.
