Stocks battered across Asia; Sensex sheds over 2,200 pts

Tracking global trends, the stock markets plunged on Monday, with the benchmark index Sensex declining 2,222.55 points to close at 78,759.40 points The broader index Nifty-50 fell by 662.10 points, ending the day at 24,055.60.

Among the Nifty companies, only five advanced while 45 declined, underscoring the market's bearish sentiment.

Stock market investors lost a whopping Rs 15.32 lakh crore on Monday following a crash in Indian equities triggered by a sharp plunge in Japanese and other global markets.

Following the sharp decline in equities, the market capitalisation of BSElisted firms dropped by Rs 15,32,796.1 crore to Rs 4,41,84,150.03 crore (USD 5.27 trillion).

In broad-based selling, all sectoral indces came under intense pressure and ended the day in the red.
