Conceived by The Mother (Mirra Alfassa) in 1968 and inspired by the spiritual teachings of Sri Aurobindo, Auroville was envisioned as a universal town where people from all nations live in peace, harmony, and collective spiritual progress, beyond the boundaries of nationality, religion, and politics.

Now administered under the Auroville Foundation Act of 1988, the township is governed by a three-tier structure comprising the Governing Board, the International Advisory Council, and the Residents' Assembly. This framework was established to safeguard Auroville's ethos and ensure its orderly growth. Recent efforts by the Auroville Foundation have breathed new life into this vision, bringing long-pending developmental, environmental, and administrative goals into active execution.
