Reimagining Nalanda: Bridging civilizations through soft power diplomacy
The Daily Guardian

OPINION
The roots of Indian civilization have always been anchored in knowledge, inquiry, and moral vision. From Takshashila to Nalanda, from Patanjali's sutras to Panini's grammar, India's educational heritage shaped generations not only within the subcontinent but across Asia and beyond. Today, as global geopolitics witnesses a renewed interest in soft power diplomacy, India is uniquely positioned to lead this discourse not merely through its economic or military strength, but through the power of its civilizational knowledge systems.
The recent launch of the Setubandha Vidwan Yojana, which allows Gurukul-trained scholars to enter premier institutions like the IITs without formal degrees, is a transformative policy in this direction. It marks the beginning of a cultural reset with the one that revalidates traditional epistemologies and offers them a platform within modern academia.
As a student of Nalanda University, an institution that itself is a symbol of India's intellectual and civilizational rebirth, I believe that educational spaces like Nalanda must be made integral to this evolving framework of soft power diplomacy. The university's vision, heritage, and global character make it uniquely qualified to complement India's new policy directions that seek to bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary relevance.
SETUBANDHA VIDWAN YOJANA: A BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT
The Setubandha Vidwan Yojana, announced in July 2025, allows scholars from Gurukul backgrounds to gain direct admission into top Indian institutions including IITs and central universities without requiring traditional university degrees. Backed by monthly fellowships and research grants, the scheme reflects a radical inclusion of Indic knowledge systems into the national research architecture.
