Harvard University recently announced a remarkable discovery: a medieval charter in its law library, long thought to be a faded copy of the Magna Carta, is an original 1300 Magna Carta issued by King Edward I.

REDISCOVERING THE PAST: THE 1300 MAGNA CARTA MANUSCRIPT FOUND AT HARVARD

A MEDIEVAL TREASURE IN HARVARD'S STACKS

The find came to light when Professor David Carpenter of King's College London spotted a digitized image of the Harvard document online late in 2023 and realized it matched the style of Edward I's version of the charter.

Carpenter and his colleague Nicholas Vincent then compared its text and handwriting to those of the six other known copies of Edward I's 1300 charter.

Harvard's Law Library had paid only $27.50 in 1946 for the parchment — about $450 today — describing it as a "somewhat rubbed and damp-stained" copy of a later charter. It was an authentic medieval treasure.

The professors hailed it as "a fantastic discovery," noting that the Magna Carta is among the "most significant documents in world constitutional history".

Their announcement on May 15, 2025, made headlines around the world.

This previously neglected parchment is now recognized as one of only seven surviving copies of the 1300 Magna Carta known to historians.

Harvard's law library quickly praised the finding, calling the charter "an invaluable historical document" and announcing plans to preserve it and share it with scholars and the public.

For perspective, another Magna Carta copy — a 1297 charter — sold at auction for $21.3 million in 2007, making Harvard's 1946 purchase look like one of history's great bargains.

Using modern imaging methods, researchers examined the faded parchment to unlock details invisible to the naked eye.

Ultraviolet light and high-resolution scanning revealed hidden marks and ink variations.

Most crucially, the distinctive handwriting — including the large capital "E" of the word Edwardus — aligned perfectly with the original 1300 charters.

This high-tech sleuthing, combined with careful study of the wording, confirmed that an authentic Edward I-era Magna Carta.
