Opposition Criticizes Government Bill on Removing Arrested Prime Ministers and Chief Ministers

The Lok Sabha erupted in protests on Wednesday as Amit Shah introduced bills to bar jailed leaders from holding office.
The Lok Sabha witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday as Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced three contentious legislations—the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025—prompting opposition MPs to tear and fling copies of the bills towards the Treasury benches.
The bills, later referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament, seek to disqualify a Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or Minister if they face corruption or serious criminal charges and remain in custody for 30 consecutive days. The J&K Bill specifically amends Section 54 of the 2019 Reorganisation Act to enable the removal of the Chief Minister or Ministers under such circumstances.
