India Slams 'Unjust' U.S. Tariff Hike Amid Ongoing Russian Oil Row
The Daily Guardian
|August 07, 2025
In a sharp escalation of trade tensions, India on Wednesday condemned the United States' decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports, calling the move "unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable".
The response came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order increasing the total tariff burden on Indian goods to 50 per cent, citing India's continued purchase of Russian oil as the primary reason.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly rebutted the decision, stating that India was being selectively targeted, despite other nations such as China and Turkey also continuing large-scale energy trade with Russia.
"The United States has in recent days targeted India's oil imports from Russia. We have already made clear our position on these issues, including the fact that our imports are based on market factors and done with the overall objective of ensuring the energy security of 1.4 billion people of India," said the MEA in a statement.
