Review of Yellow: Poemlets New & Earlier by Sukrita, published by Sahitya Akademi, 2024
Coleridge described poetry as 'the best words in the best order'. The poet Sukrita's vividly evocative collection of short poems, which appears under the title Yellow, is a testament to her dedication towards the form of precision poetry.
The poetry collection under review gives a fresh lease of life to the genre of short poems or what has been labelled as 'poemlet' in the title. Several western poets have experimented with this genre giving it myriad shapes and forms.
In this context, the names of EE Cummings and Ezra Pound—and their memorably pithy lines—come to mind. Indian poets too have dabbled in the genre too. Vikram Seth and Arun Kolkatkar are among the leading names. Sukrita's latest book has carved a niche for itself in the category where the above-mentioned poets belong.
