DAMS IN INDIA

Dams in India have a rich history dating back thousands of years, with some of the earliest known dams built during the Indus Valley Civilization. The ancient dams were primarily used for irrigation and water storage.

In modern times, India has constructed numerous dams for various purposes including irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, flood control, and water supply. One of the most notable dams is the Bhakra-Nangal Dam, completed in 1963, which is one of the largest multipurpose dams in India, providing irrigation water and hydroelectric power. Other significant dams include the Tehri Dam, Sardar Sarovar Dam, and the Narmada Dam. Dams in India have played a crucial role in the country's economic development, although they have also been subject to controversy due to their environmental and social impacts.

HERE'S A BROAD OVERVIEW FROM ANCIENT TO MODERN TIMES

Ancient Era (Indus Valley Civilization - 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE): Some of the earliest known dams in India were built during the Indus Valley Civilization. These ancient dams were primarily made of stone, mud, and brick, and were constructed for irrigation purposes to support agricultural activities along the fertile plains of the Indus River and its tributaries. The ruins of ancient dams and reservoirs have been discovered at sites like Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.

Medieval Period (600 CE to 1700 CE): During the medieval period, various dynasties and empires in India, such as the Mauryas, Cholas, and Mughals, constructed dams and water management systems to support agriculture, control floods, and provide water for cities and towns. The Kallanai Dam (Grand Anicut) in Tamil Nadu, built by the Chola king Karikalan around the 2nd century CE, is one of theoldest functional dams in the world.
