The Bill proposes life imprisonment for the sacrilege of holy scriptures
The Punjab Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, on Monday approved the Punjab Prevention of Offences Against Holy Scripture(s) Bill, 2025, which proposes life imprisonment for the sacrilege of holy scriptures. The Bill was tabled in the Vidhan Sabha later in the day, but not before a series of dramatic developments inside the House delayed its presentation.
Before the Bill was introduced, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan adjourned the House for an hour and summoned all party leaders to his chamber for a discussion on the sensitive nature of the legislation. This move was seen as an effort to seek consensus and ensure smooth proceedings, given the emotive nature of the subject.
