Strauss & Co live-virtual auction set for Tuesday.
-
Strauss & Co auction series will focus on contemporary ceramics, Pierneef prints and artworks collected by soprano Mimi Coertse. Strauss & Co said the High Note, a live-virtual auction of modern and contemporary art, would be held on Tuesday at 7pm.
The sale, part of a trio planned for this month, features a small consignment of eight works from the personal collection of Coertse, alongside notable works by William Kentridge, JH Pierneef and Lady Skollie.
Leading the sale is Kentridge's boldly coloured etching Dutch Iris II (estimated between R700 000 and R900 000), a rare edition of a popular motif in the artist's extensive output of graphics.
Also on offer is an iconic landscape by Pierneef, painted in 1928 (estimated between R400 000 and R600 000), one of six works by the artist included in High Note.
Coertse, a celebrated operatic talent who performed across Europe in the 1950s and 60s, assembled an endearing collection of oils, watercolours, ceramics and prints by artists of her generation.
