New York - Reigning champion Jannik Sinner (right) insisted he was "not a machine" after coming through a testing encounter with Denis Shapovalov on Saturday to book his place in the US Open last 16.
The world No 1 rallied from a set down to beat Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 and keep alive his bid to become the first man to retain the title in New York since Roger Federer in 2008.
"A very tough match today. I've known Denis for quite a long time. I knew that I had to play at a very high level," Sinner said after a three-hour battle with the 27th seed from Canada.
The Italian avenged his loss to Shapovalov at the 2021 Australian Open in their only previous meeting.
"I'm not a machine, you know," said Sinner. "I also struggle sometimes.
