My Vote Counts 'misses point'

DONATIONS: NON-PROFIT 'SHORTSIGHTED' ABOUT DISCLOSURE

The non-profit My Vote Counts (MVC) push to have sections of the Political Party Funding Act declared unconstitutional is "shortsighted", ActionSA's chair Michael Beaumont said outside the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town yesterday.

The non-profit organisation is aiming to have the disclosure parameters of political donations adjusted, but ActionSA is one of 19 respondents to the application.

Beaumont said the problem with the Act was not the donor thresholds, but cases of non-compliance.

Currently, the Act dictates any donations of more than R100 000 to political parties need to be disclosed to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).

All donations under that threshold can remain undisclosed.

There is also a donation limit of R15 million per year per juristic person.
