Illegal migrants 'burden systems' - ANCYL leader
The Citizen
|August 28, 2025
President of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Collen Malatji denies his comments on the "burden" of illegal foreign nationals are xenophobic.
"Uncontrolled and illegal migration places an unsustainable burden on our communities, on the health system, education and most importantly on the labour market, where young South Africans are already struggling to find work," he said.
"If you stay in SA and you go to a public service [clinic], then you know that illegal foreign nationals are heavy on our system.
"Due to our human rights commission, you cannot chase people away when they are sick; it's inhuman. But they are heavy on the system.
"We budget for the people in our country. Someone who enters the country illegally is heavy on the infrastructure and is not budgeted for," he said.

Comparing apples to oranges
The clever observation on X yesterday by former Gauteng premier Mbhazima Shilowa about the resignation of British prime minister Sir Keir Starmer may not be the “gotcha!” win he might think it is, especially if the implication is that our democracy in South Africa is, somehow, superior.
